The Role of Tourism in Poverty Alleviation in Tanzania

“The main objective of this study was to analyse the direct and indirect livelihood
impacts from tourism and their implications for poverty alleviation. The sector being the fastest growing sector in Tanzania, the study intended to investigate the benefits and costs of tourism on the society in general and on the poor in particular. In order to achieve this objective the study dwelt on questions related to generation of foreign exchange and public revenues, employment, incomes, accessibility to assets and basic needs and their effects on the poor, and the linkages of tourism to the local economy. Both positive and negative
aspects were studied. Issues affecting participation/non-participation in tourism
and the way respondents perceived tourism were examined.”
