The precarious position of South Africa in the Commonwealth must be regarded in conjunction with the political situation in South Africa as well as the history that played a role in the development of the political situation. The Commonwealth was an informal association of member states and sentiment and expediency played a role in closing ties. Although the ties that bind South Africa to the Commonwealth have being weakened because of the multiracial nature on the one hand other factors like World communism strengthened the bond.
