Occasional Paper

The OAU, AU, NEPAD and the Promotion of Good Governance in Africa

“The paper argued that there are ample grounds for optimism on the ability of NEPAD and the APR to promote good governance. NEPAD is dubbed as a home-initiated project, which give it some degree of support and legitimacy in Africa. Besides, the growing international aversion for undemocratic regimes and practices enhances the prospects for good governance under the NEPAD. The paper also noted the daunting hurdles facing NEPAD and the APR in promoting good governance, hurdles that underscore the need for caution in celebrating the birth of NEPAD and the APR as instruments of good governance. NEPAD still remains a suspicious and controversial project, especially because it was not informed by debates and consultations.”
