The implications of Transkeian independence

The independence of Transkei will become a reality in October 1976. For South Africa the most important implication of independence will be the influence on the Government policy but successful and peaceful independence could also influence the position of blacks in South Africa as well as changing their political attitudes. However independence for Transkei should also mean an increase in fair dealings and good relationships with South Africa. Factors that will have an impact on the independence include equality and international recognition for Transkei. The fact remains that South Africa and Transkei will have to co-exist in future and a number of political, economic and social issues will have to be addressed.
