Public Information as a Mission Critical Component of West African Peace Operations

“The aim of this monograph is to analyse the extent to which PI has become mission critical in West African peace operations. By extrapolating, analyzing and drawing on lessons learned, the aim is to highlight where such a capability can be prioritized institutionally, developed and better utilized in future peace operations in the sub-region. The concept of peacekeeping requires a comprehensive analysis of PI-initiatives and the wider efficacy that this kind of capability has brought to missions. This study focuses on the experience of UN peace operations in Sierra Leone and Liberia as specific case studies – UN Missions in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) and United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) respectively. These cases demonstrate a number of similarities which offer a sound basis for comparative and complementary analysis.”
