“Due to the interrelationships between the various phases of drought, the review generally deals with the whole inter-drought cycle, but has put much emphasis on the post-drought period. Regarding the drought period and subsequent responses, the review reveals some ten coping mechanisms of pastoral house-holds in the Hom of Africa. These are: (i) movement to places where the availability of pasture and water are relatively better; (ii)
herd diversification in favor of resilience to drought; (iii) herd splitting; (iv)herd expansion and dispersal; (v) dispersal of resources and assistance from relatives; (vi) forage supplementation; (vii)generation of food stores; (viii)sale of non-livestock assets,; (ix) income generation from non-pastoral activities; and (x) reduction of food intake and change in diet composition.”
