Perils and Complexity of Democratic Values in Namibia

Namibia has been unique in its transition to democracy. This is illustrated in the formal role of the international community during the transition and in the expression of democratic values and practices measured by international indices. Namibia continues to be at, or near, the bottom when it comes to citizens’ preference for democracy, especially when compared to other high performing African democracies. The low levels of support for democracy in Namibia continue to be surprising given the country’s stable multi-party system and high democratic ranking.
