Impact of China and India on Sub Saharan African Metals, Ores and Minerals – Issues and Challenges

“Sub-Saharan Africa provides a significant share of the mineral resources fuelling the growth of the dynamic Asian economies of India and China. This framework paper examines the current metals, ores and minerals trade between China and India and the attendant issues this poses for producer countries. A range of issue and challenges for further research emerge as businesses, governments and civil society groups witness sub Saharan mineral producing countries coming to grips with the opportunities for economic development afforded by tight commodity markets while adjusting to the role of China and India as both major markets for minerals as well as sources of direct investment. Risks of distorted growth patterns over reliant on export receipts from mineral sales are simultaneously part of the challenge facing sub Saharan mineral producers.”
