Gender, Women and Electoral Politics in Zimbabwe

"This study seeks to analyse the constitutional and legislative provisions pertaining to the Zimbabwean 2000 parliamentary and 2002 presidential elections and to determine the extent to which they promoted gender equality. The concept of equality needs to be explained in order to eliminate misconceptions about means and ends. Equality can be understood to occur in a mechanical fashion where claimants to resources and goods are expected to have access to these resources to the same degree. However, in process terms, issues of equality are often complex because they arise in the contexts of past discrimination, exclusion, differing capacities, skills, exposure and opportunities to access and enjoy the valued goods in any society."
