Gaps and Shortages in South Africa’s Health Workforce

“Human resources for health play a critical role in the effective delivery of health services, especially in high disease-burdened countries like South Africa. Constraints in the health workforce have emerged as a key obstacle to scaling-up access to prevention and treatment for the 5.7 million people currently living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa. A recent strategic plan, released in 2012 by the South African government, aims to address the gaps in human resources for health and is expected to mitigate the resource shortage within the next 15 to 25 years.”
