Diversification of Livelihood as Adaptation to Climate Change by Local Communities

This policy brief looks at two case studies to highlight climate change issues. These case studies address the challenges of climate change through livelihood diversification. Communities in the past have adapted to climate change through observation, experimentation and practice. However adaptation to the rapid changes are beyond that of a natural self-correcting process. Efforts to reduce the vulnerability of communities must reinforce risk management and coping capacities. Carefully planned intervention including supporting policies and regulations are needed to meet household level requirements for food, fuel and income. One strategy is livelihood diversification.
