AERC Scoping Studies on China Africa Economic Relations : The Case of The Gambia
"The relationship between The Gambia and Taiwan has been cordial and multifaceted, since the resumption of diplomatic relations in 1995. It is based on shared common understanding and mutual respect. These have been shaping the relations of the two countries. The two countries shared a common stance in justice, democracy, freedom, and development. These ideals, which constitute the foundation for any genuine friendship, have been the springboard for bilateral cooperation between the governments of the two countries and their peoples. It is sufficient to say that the assistance of Taiwan in The Gambia’s development processes has been quite immense. Thus, these have resulted in many accomplishments that have a direct bearing on the socio-economic livelihood of the people, thereby complementing The Gambia government’s efforts. Since transportation is crucial in any development process, The Gambia has benefited from Taiwan’s assistance in the construction of the Highway from Barra to Kerewan and this was followed with the construction of four feeder roads in the Western Region."
