Kojo Busia

Kojo Busia is the Senior Mineral Sector Governance Advisor for the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)'s African Mineral Development Centre (AMDC).  He leads the Governance and Participation Team, under the African Mining Vision (AMV), an African Union flagship program for sustainable and inclusive mineral development.  Prior to working in the newly established African Mineral Development Centre, Dr. Busia spent nearly a decade  leading and directing UNECA's support to the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), the most significant governance initiative for addressing governance challenges in Africa in the last decade. In this role, he facilitated the adoption of the APRM and helped the flagship initiative to gain institutional traction throughout Africa and globally.  He became the most visible and ardent advocate for the adoption of the APRM at the international, multi-lateral as well as the bilateral levels throughout Africa and globally.

Prior to his work with the UNECA, Mr. Busia worked as a Foreign Service Officer at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) where he rose to the level of Team Leader under that organization’s Democratic Governance Programme. Mr. Busia obtained his PhD. from the Cornell University, U.S. A., where he focused on international development policy. His has a Masters Degree in Political Science and African Studies, and Bachelors in International Relations. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for African Development (IAD) in Cornell University in 2009, as well as a Fellow at the Aspen Institute under the International Advancement Fellowship Program. Mr. Busia is also a recipient of the USAID Meritorious (Global) Service Award. He has authored several policy papers and reports on mineral resource governance, Corporate Social Responsibility, democracy, accountability and governance systems in Africa, aid and development policy, human rights and institutional capacity building.
