Mining operations of 7 diamond companies in Manicaland Province were shut down by the government in February 2016, because their operations lacked transparency and accountability. Government decided to merge diamond companies into the newly formed Zimbabwe Consolidation Diamond Company (ZCDC), in order to centralize its oversight role in the exploitation of diamonds. Responding to the shutdown, the Centre for Research and Development (CRD) edged government to undertake due diligence processes before commencement of ZCDC mining operations. Due diligence processes compelled government to undertake comprehensive audits across the diamond value chain and hold companies to account for negative human rights impacts.
