Before joining International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), he was professor and vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana from 2002 to 2006. Asenso-Okyere was also associated with the university's Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research and served as director of that institute from 1997 to 2002. Asenso-Okyere's academic interests include economic and business development policies and management, with special emphasis on food and agriculture, health and nutrition, regional cooperation and international trade, and quantitative decision modeling. He holds a B.Sc. (honors), from the University of Ghana; an M.Sc. from the University of Guelph, Canada; and a Ph.D from the University of Missouri.
